Prominent Filipino cryptocurrency influencers recently reported separate attempts by cybercriminals to compromise their devices using sophisticated social engineering tactics. The warnings, issued by web3 content creator Icesteam Jimenez and financial educator Coach Miranda Miner or Arlone Abello in real life, detailed the growing trend of attackers using legitimate platforms like LinkedIn, Calendly, and Google Meet to deceive victims.
Podcast Invitation Used as Bait
In a social media post, Jimenez reported about a multi-day operation where attackers impersonated podcast organizers:
- The attackers contacted the influencer to invite him as a guest on a podcast.
- The perpetrators scheduled the session through Calendly, sent a Google Meet invitation, and emailed a professional podcast script alongside a request for the influencer’s biography.
- A technical representative joined the scheduled video call via webcam, conducting a normal introductory conversation about the script and upcoming interview questions.
- After establishing rapport, the representative directed Jimenez to install a malicious file presented under the guise of a StreamYard recording link.
Jimenez noted that professional emails, real video calls, Calendly bookings, polished scripts, and even verified X accounts with high follower counts are no longer absolute proof of legitimacy.
“Verify the organizers through multiple channels, and never install software during a live call unless you’ve independently confirmed it’s safe,” Jimenez stated.
Fake Recruitment Schemes on LinkedIn
Separately, Coach Miranda Miner (Arlone Abello) warned followers of a fraudulent recruitment scheme conducted through LinkedIn. An attacker posing as a recruiter requested a resume and directed the influencer to complete a simulated online assessment on a website mimicking the legitimate platform Xobin, which ultimately concluded with a request for a recorded video interview.
Clicking the provided link triggered an error prompt containing malicious script. “Yang error ang kukuha ng mga details mo sa PC if you run that sa terminal mo. Wag na wag!! (“That error will harvest the details from your PC if you run that in your terminal. Never do it!) ” Abello warned, advising professionals to be cautious of fraudulent recruiters on the platform.
Heightened Need for Verification
The two influencers issued distinct warnings to their respective audiences regarding how to handle these interactions.
Jimenez focused on the deceptive nature of social media status, stating that “even X accounts with over 100,000 followers with blue tick are not enough to prove someone is legitimate.”
Meanwhile, Abello emphasized direct vigilance against online employment fraud, urging followers to “ingat kayo sa mga recruiter KUNO sa linkedin ha,” after noting that the simulated technical errors are designed to harvest personal computer data.
