What is ERC-7857? A New Standard for Intelligent NFTs

0G Labs has recently introduced ERC-7857—a new standard designed specifically for AI agents that brings Intelligent NFTs (iNFTs) to life.

This new framework is set to address the unique needs of AI agents in decentralised ecosystems by embedding them within Intelligent NFTs (iNFTs). Unlike traditional NFTs, iNFTs enable AI agents to be owned, traded, and interacted with in a way that ensures privacy, security, and dynamic functionality.

With AI agents continuing to grow in both complexity and application, ERC-7857 is positioned to meet the demands that current NFT standards fall short on, providing a robust solution for AI-driven innovation on the blockchain.

What are Intelligent NFTs (iNFTs)?

Intelligent NFTs, or iNFTs, represent a fusion of artificial intelligence and blockchain technology. These NFTs are used to tokenise AI agents, allowing them to be bought, sold, and transferred securely. Unlike traditional NFTs, which represent static assets such as digital art or collectibles, iNFTs bring AI agents into the decentralised ecosystem by allowing them to evolve and learn.

The key advantage of iNFTs is that they provide a mechanism for ownership and control over AI agents in a decentralized manner. This means that instead of being managed by centralised organizations, the control and value of AI agents are fully in the hands of their owners. Additionally, creators of iNFTs can benefit from royalties whenever the AI agents are resold, creating a new economic model for AI development.

Each iNFT includes unique metadata that represents the “intelligence” of the AI agent. This metadata could include the agent’s neural networks, behavior patterns, and other proprietary data that define how the agent functions. However, this metadata must be securely stored and managed—a challenge that ERC-7857 addresses.

Limitations of Existing NFT Standards

Current NFT standards, such as ERC-721 and ERC-1155, have been effective in representing static digital assets like artwork and in-game items. However, they have significant limitations when applied to AI agents. Here are the primary issues:

    1. Static Metadata: ERC-721 and ERC-1155 tokens rely on static metadata that doesn’t change once the token is minted. However, AI agents are dynamic, constantly evolving based on new data and training. The static nature of existing metadata standards makes them unsuitable for representing the continuous learning and adaptation that defines AI.
    2. Insecure Metadata Transfer: When an NFT is transferred, typically only the ownership of the token is transferred, whilst the metadata remains either static or is inaccessible. For AI agents, the metadata—such as neural models, learning history, and behavioral patterns—needs to be transferred along with the ownership to ensure that the new owner has full access to the agent’s capabilities.
    3. No Encryption for Sensitive Data: AI agents often contain proprietary data or sensitive information, such as custom-trained models or user-specific data. Existing NFT standards don’t offer native support for encrypting or securely handling this data, making them ill-suited for tokenising AI agents.

How will ERC-7857 solve these issues?

ERC-7857 was specifically developed to address the shortcomings of current NFT standards, offering a more secure and flexible framework for AI agents. Here’s how ERC-7857 solves the issues:

    1. Privacy-Preserving Metadata: ERC-7857 allows for the encryption of the metadata associated with AI agents. This ensures that sensitive data, such as neural network models or proprietary learning algorithms, remains private and secure.
    2. Secure Metadata Transfer: When an ERC-7857 token is transferred, the associated metadata is also transferred securely. Both the ownership and the metadata are handled together, ensuring that the new owner receives the AI agent in its entirety, including its dynamic capabilities.
    3. Dynamic Metadata: Unlike static metadata in traditional NFTs, ERC-7857 supports the dynamic nature of AI agent metadata. As AI agents learn and evolve over time, their metadata can be updated to reflect changes in their behavior, intelligence, or other capabilities. This ensures that the agent’s capabilities remain intact and are accurately represented.
    4. Integration with Decentralised Storage: ERC-7857 works in tandem with decentralized storage solutions like 0G Storage, ensuring that encrypted metadata is stored securely and remains tamper-proof, whilst still being accessible to authorized parties.
    5. Verifiable Ownership and Transfers: ERC-7857 uses cryptographic proofs and oracles to verify both ownership and the integrity of the metadata transfer. This adds an additional layer of security and trust to the process, ensuring that the transfer of both ownership and metadata is authentic and verifiable.

Potential Use Cases for ERC-7857

ERC-7857 opens up numerous possibilities for AI agents across various sectors. Here are some potential applications of the standard:

    1. AI Marketplaces: iNFTs can be bought, sold, and traded on decentralised marketplaces. These platforms would allow creators to monetize their AI agents and buyers to purchase fully functional agents with encrypted metadata.
    2. Personalised AI Assistants: Individuals can own and customize AI agents for personal tasks, such as automating workflows, managing digital assets, or interacting with dApps. These agents could then be resold, with the new owners inheriting the agent’s personalized features.
    3. Enterprise AI Solutions: Businesses can create proprietary AI agents tailored to specific tasks, such as customer service bots or financial advisors, and securely transfer or lease these agents to other businesses or subsidiaries.
    4. AI-as-a-Service: iNFTs could be used to tokenize AI agents that are leased on a subscription basis. This would allow users to access advanced AI services for specific applications without needing to develop their own AI agents.
    5. Intellectual Property Monetization: AI developers can tokenize their models, ensuring they retain control over how and when their creations are used. This allows for new models of intellectual property monetization in the AI space.

The launch of ERC-7857 is a key step in advancing the integration of AI and blockchain and 0G Labs invites developers and projects to explore how this standard can support their own project’s growth.
