Key Takeaways
- Singapore Gulf Bank adopted BNY’s 24/7 USD settlement for eligible weekend and holiday payments.
- The move narrows stablecoins’ always-on edge as banks extend dollar settlement beyond normal hours.
- Attention now shifts to whether banks can match crypto on speed, reach, and programmability.
BNY Pushes Traditional Banking Closer to Crypto’s 24/7 Model
Traditional finance is starting to chip away at crypto’s monopoly on always-on money.
Singapore Gulf Bank said it has adopted BNY’s 24/7 USD Book Transfers service, giving eligible corporate and retail clients the ability to settle qualifying dollar payments outside standard U.S. banking hours.
That includes weekends and U.S. public holidays.
The service can be used for account funding, corporate payables, and time-sensitive cross-border treasury transactions. Singapore Gulf Bank said it is among the first financial institutions globally to adopt the system.
Dollar Settlement Moves Beyond the Banking Clock
The service allows USD transfers to settle at any time between eligible accounts held directly with BNY or through correspondent banks enrolled in the network.
That matters for companies operating across multiple time zones, where waiting for U.S. banking hours can create liquidity and settlement delays.
“Our clients operate across markets and time zones, and their business needs do not always fall within traditional U.S. banking hours,” SGB Executive Vice Chairman Ali Moosa said.
For treasury teams in the Gulf, Asia, and other international markets, removing those time restrictions could simplify cross-border cash management.
Traditional Finance Borrows From the Crypto Playbook
The development also has clear implications for crypto and stablecoins.
One of the strongest arguments for dollar-backed stablecoins such as USDC and USDT has been their ability to move globally at any hour, while conventional banking infrastructure often pauses overnight or during weekends.
BNY’s system does not replicate permissionless blockchain settlement. Transfers remain limited to eligible institutions and accounts within its participating banking network.
Still, 24/7 settlement reduces part of the operational gap.
As banks modernize payment infrastructure, stablecoins may increasingly compete on programmability, global accessibility, and onchain integration rather than simply being available around the clock.
Cross-Border Treasury Is Becoming an Always-on Market
BNY said continuous settlement can give institutions more flexibility in managing liquidity.
“Round-the-clock USD settlement gives institutions greater agility in managing liquidity and fulfilling urgent financial obligations,” said Bana Akkad Azhari, EMEA head of global payments and trade at BNY.
That is increasingly important as financial markets move toward faster settlement and crypto markets operate continuously. For Singapore Gulf Bank, the integration expands its correspondent banking network across the Gulf, Asia, and other markets.
For the broader financial industry, the signal is bigger.
Always-on settlement is no longer solely a crypto feature. Banks are starting to bring it into conventional dollar infrastructure, and that could reshape where stablecoins maintain their strongest competitive advantage.
